The idea for Grey Sail Brewing of RI was born on the beaches of Misquamicut and Watch Hill in Westerly, Rhode Island. During the summer months, owner Jennifer Brinton takes her children to these beaches nearly every day. They’re joined on weekends by Jen’s husband, Alan, a homebrewing enthusiast who has long nurtured the dream of one day starting his own brewery. During the summer of 2009, with their youngest child a year away from school, Jen began to think about returning to the workforce after 8 years as a full-time mom. She had already started a successful part-time wedding planning business and considered taking that full-time. But in the end, Jen decided to use her entrepreneurial talents to tackle an even larger endeavor: building and running the brewery that Alan had envisioned. The project quickly gained momentum, but was temporarily sidetracked when Jen and Alan were blessed with their fourth child. Now, with their family complete, the brewery is more than a summer daydream… it’s a reality! Jen is excited about starting a business in the town she now calls home. Originally from New Jersey, she has fallen in love with Westerly and her hope is that the brewery will be a vehicle for giving back to the community. The name was inspired during one of Jen’s early morning visits to the Misquamicut beach. Picture a thick morning haze backlit by the low-hanging sun… sailboats carving wakes in the middle distance, their ghostly grey sails silhouetted in the mist. Thirsty yet? Available for tastings on Canal or your local packy.
