The Martin House is in Westerly, RI, one of my favorite places to visit and photograph historic buildings. The buildings certainly provide a photography challenge with not only the slanted streets they are built on, but also with their slanting roofs and crooked lines. I do my best with my limited photography knowledge and trial and error editing to get the perspective right. It took four visits and experimentation with different lenses, but I`m pretty happy with how these came out in the end.
The renovated Martin House, at one time known as the Hotel Savoy, in Westerly, Rhode Island, has had an interesting life. Throughout its 135 year history, the hotel has undergone many name and ownership changes. The original owner, Michael F. Martin, an Irish immigrant, completed the construction of the building as a 42-room hotel in 1888. At one point, it was a boarding house for men only, and at another point was closed due to hosting questionable activities. In 2000, the building was purchased by a developer with the intention of renovating the space into high end housing units. The renovation for the popular Savoy Bookshop and Cafe, one of the retail shops located on the street level, was spearheaded by local philanthropist Charles Royce. The shop opened its doors in 2016. (Royce was also behind the rebuilding of the Ocean House in Watch Hill, RI, as well as many other local projects). If you enjoy browsing bookshops, the Savoy Bookshop and Cafe is a great place to visit.
The history of the Martin House in the attached article makes for an entertaining read.
