For Day 2 we decided to try one of the Golden Fork sponsors of this event: Guytanno’s. Guytanno’s is a hidden gem in Westerly so it was a must try for restaurant week. It is also featured on our Top 10 Restaurants in Westerly.

Course 3:

Carrot Cake

There were great choices for the first course but I knew I was going to go “big” on the second course so I decided to keep it small for the first course with the house salad. I also think you can tell a lot about a restaurant from their “simpler” dishes and this salad won me over instantly. Just from the look of it I could tell that this is not your typical house salad. Guytanno’s serves sesame covered bread before the meal and they also use that bread for their croutons. I’m usually not a crouton in my salad kind of person but this was a game changer. They weren’t too crunchy and they packed a great flavor. This salad also included sliced beets, julienne carrots and cucumber, red onions, red cabbage, grape tomatoes over field greens. For dressing I chose to go with parmesan peppercorn. This was a nice compliment to the salad. It was creamy but not too heavy and very flavorful. I usually go with a vinaigrette or a ranch dressing but I decided to go different and I am glad I did. I would say that this was a great merger of my usual dressings.
For the second course I knew from the start that I was picking the salmon. Everything about the description had me sold: roasted salmon fillet, cucumber dill creme fresh, red bliss mashed potatoes, and chefs vegetables (carrots and french green beans). The salmon melted in your mouth and was good with and without the creme fresh. The skin was also nice and crispy. The creme fresh reminded me of a tzatziki sauce. It was a nice pairing to the salmon and vegetables. I never thought of pairing salmon with something heavy like mashed potatoes but I enjoyed it. Using red bliss potatoes was also an interesting touch and not a type of potato I am use to seeing in mashed potatoes, but I really enjoyed them. The mashed potatoes tasted fresh and creamy. This was a heavy dish so I had to pace myself so I would have room for dessert.
When it came to the third course I had a hard time deciding on which dessert to go with. In the end I went with the carrot cake. I feel like carrot cake can be a simpler dish as well and I was really interested in how this would taste. From the first bite I was very happy with my decision. The cake was moist and packed with flavor. It also had a caramel drizzle on top and a side of whipped cream. I personally enjoyed the cake without the whipped cream, it was enjoyable without it. The icing was a tasty cream creese icing that was light and creamy. I liked that it wasn’t too heavy.

I highly recommend Guytanno’s during restaurant week and anytime after. The restaurant week menu was vast as was the normal dinner menu.  I’m very interested in how their other dishes taste after trying this delicious dinner. The table next to me in the dining room was talking highly of the menu and had a hard time deciding on what to get because everything is so good.
