I think we can all agree that it’s been a very long winter. We’ve been cooped up for too long. It’s time to get out and see the world! Any time the sun comes out recently, I turn into a sun worshipper. I have to be dragged inside once the sun sets. But there’s good news: we’re in the home stretch – those long warm, sunshine-filled days are just around the corner. We’ve pulled together a bucket list of fun spring events and activities to get you through until summer vacation and those glorious lazy beach days.
Community Yoga for All, Sat Apr 21, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Everything about this is amazing because it’s all free! This yoga class was created to bring wellness to all. All participants, not just YMCA members, can take advantage of free childcare and are invited to partake in a free nutritious lunch after class. The yoga class is open to all levels, all you have to do is show up, no registration necessary. Mats and Blocks are available. It’s a great, gentle way to start moving again after a long winter.
YMCA Healthy Kids Day, Sat Apr 21, 12-2 p.m.
If you’re already at the YMCA for the community yoga, why not bring your kids to their Healthy Kids Day? The Y is committed to helping kids get on (and stay on) a healthy youth development journey that includes physical, cognitive and social-emotional growth. Healthy Kids Day is their annual, nationwide initiative designed to inspire youth, parents and caregivers-regardless of membership status-to get active and make healthy choices over the summer and beyond.
Mystic Muddy Mayhem 2018, Sat Apr 28, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
This 5k mud run includes fun & challenging obstacles along the trails of Fields of Fire Adventure Park. Open to anyone 10 and up, this run is a great way to start getting in shape again after a long winter inside. Plus, you can feel good about registering because the fees collected will go towards youth and senior recreation scholarships for the town of Groton Parks & Recreation Department or Groton Senior Center.
WARM Center’s 12th Annual Penguin Plunge, Sat May 5, 10:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.
It was so cold in January that the plunge was postponed to May but we can’t promise that the water will feel much warmer. Ditch your parka & dig out your flip flops for the first ocean dip of the summer! Or just come to cheer on your favorite plunger. All event proceeds from the plunge, which takes place at the Andrea, will benefit the WARM Center. There’s no better way to ring in spring/summer!
Misquamicut Springfest Weekend, Fri May 11, 5 p.m. – Sun May 13, 5 p.m.
As usual, the Annual Misquamicut Springfest weekend shouldn’t be missed. Rockwell Amusements will have dozens of rides, games, more than 20 food vendors, arts and craft vendors, live music, magic shows, jugglers and classic cars. There’s quite literally something for everyone. It’s an awesome time, we’d highly recommend it!
