NAPATREE POINT BEACH WESTERLY RI
Napatree Point in Rhode Island, often referred to simply as Napatree, is a long sandy spit created by a geologic process called longshore drift. Up until the Hurricane of 1938, Napatree was sickle-shaped and included a 1.5-mile (2.4 km) long northern extension called Sandy Point. Napatree now extends 1.5 miles (2.4 km) westward from the business district of Watch Hill, a village in Westerly, Rhode Island forming a protected harbor. It is the southernmost and westernmost point of mainland Rhode Island.[/fusion_text]
Napatree Point is now a wildlife preserve and a popular public beach protected by the Watch Hill Conservancy and Fire District, which have hired wardens to protect the area’s wildlife and habitat. These wardens work with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect the piping plover, a federally endangered species. This was the beach trip where Sadie ignored her recall cue to feast on a very dead seagull.
The beach was pretty empty and she was having fun running along the shore. We were looking for rocks and shells when she suddenly disappeared.
We were calling for her and started to panic. She always (up until then) came when we called her and often checked in on her own. (In the woods she would just zoom back and forth and end up doing twice the length of the hike.)
Joe decided to climb over a hill pretty close to where we were (so she absolutely heard us and knew we were looking for her) and she just had her face mashed in this dead bird. She didn’t even stop when she saw Joe, either.
Honestly, we loved her antics. She was just so funny. She did what she wanted and had very big opinions. I think the majority of our favorite Sadie memories include her being “naughty,” making direct eye contact with us, and then go back to doing what she was doing.
We laughed so much with that dog. We were always narrating her. She still makes us laugh. Sometimes we look at each other and go “I’m BUSY.

He formally named Fisher’s Island after one of his crew and he called the narrow spit of land extending out from Watch Hill “Nap of Trees” because of its heavy forest cover. The name Napatree Point has persisted. Captain Block then visited Block Island and named it after himself (1).
